News Around the Club
We have busy times ahead for the remaining days of October and into November. We'll finish out October with a Fun Halloween themed pistol shoot on the 29th., followed on the 30th. with a Pumpkin Drop and a Cowboy/3-Gun shoot. Going into November we have our annual Turkey Shoot on the 20th. preceded by a Cleanup and Woodsplitting/Stacking day on the 12th. with a rain date of the 19th. Strong backs will be need to process the pile of wood that is blocking direct access to the skeet field from the parking lot. We have one log splitter but more will help make short work of the wood pile.
Availability Of New Keys
The locks were changed at the Annual Meeting. New keys are available for $3.00, exact change please. Times when you may purchase a new key are: monthly meetings, any club event (skeet, trap, etc.) or weekday afternoons around 4:00 p.m.
Pistol
The Pistol Committee held a "Miss and You're Out" Match on Saturday October 8th which attracted a dozen or so shooters. The action was fast and furious with the course of fire being shot eight times. With eight relays being shot, the results are too voluminous to post here — results are posted on the outside and inside notice boards and on the range.
Our next pistol match will be a Spooktacular Halloween themed fun match on Saturday October 29th. starting at noon. There will be ghosts and witches to hit with a pistol plus balloons dancing in the wind to pop with a .22LR rifle.
Cowboy Action Shooting
The Cowboy/3-Gun clinic held in September was such a hit that the next Cowboy Shoot scheduled for October 30th at 9:00 a.m. will also be a 3-Gun Shoot.
Skeet & Trap
Upland season will soon be here as will the migratory seasons. Shooting both skeet and trap are excellent ways to sharpen or fine tune your wing shooting skills.
Pumpkin Drop
Candy-filled pumpkins will be dropped from a crane courtesy of Dave Glancy and dglancycrane.com on Sunday, October 30th at 1:00 p.m. The pumpkins are hollowed out and filled with candy.
This Pumpkin Drop is for club members and their children only — emphasis on the children. The public is not invited. Strict safety protocols will be in place with children not allowed to proceed to the impact zone until the pumpkins have hit the ground — then it will be a free-for-all.
Skeet will be open from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM for those members wanting to get a couple of rounds in.
Hunter Ed Courses – Independent Study Format
MassWildlife is now holding Independent Study Format courses where students attend a class, complete a homework assignment either in printed notebook form or online, and finally attend a field day. This format is being given locally at Marshfield Rod & Gun club; unfortunately the courses for 2022 are full. Note that MassWildlife has been way behind due to shortage of people and there has been a huge backlog.

Archery
We've had several recent new members express an interest in archery. The practice butts are in need of repair and the 3-D course is out there somewhere severely overgrown. One of the new members has offered to head up an effort to refurbish the practice range and get the 3-D course back to a usable condition.

Crossing The Mississippi Into Indian Territory

Jean and I drove to Oklahoma to compete in the SASS Cowboy Action Shooting Championship held in Arcadia, OK from October 8th through the 16th.
The main match was shot over 3 days with 4 stages each day.
I,"Yankee", shot the match clean and took 3rd place in the Over 70 Black-powder Cartridge category and Jean, "Boston Lady", took 3rd place in Ladies Over 70 Black-powder Cartridge Category.
There were over 700 competitors in the match, and the range at the Oklahoma City Gun Club was set up for a great, straight forward, no procedural traps.
The awards banquet was held at the Cowboy Hall of Fame Museum in Oklahoma City with over 800 folks in attendance, plus we got to tour the Museum for free.
We shall return.
Gun Sales In Deep Blue Massachusetts Hit Record Levels Beginning In 2020, Sparked By Fear

The majority of gun sales in Massachusetts were for handguns
Gun sales in Massachusetts — a state with historically low firearm ownership — have skyrocketed since 2020, due in-part to people wanting to arm themselves out of fear, according to a new report.
Many customers "haven’t fully grasped the idea of wanting to own a firearm for defensive purposes, but something brought them here," Cape Gun Works co-owner Toby Leary told local outlet WBUR. "They feel like they’ve been spurred to do it based on what they see, or their own personal feelings about the world."
Leary said many of his customers during the pandemic and following months told him that they did not like guns, but that fear pushed them to make the purchase, WBUR reported.
The WBUR analysis published August 3rd found gun dealers in the state sold nearly 276,000 firearms from 2020 through 2021, with the majority of sales being handguns, at 64%, while 23% of the sales were for rifles. Read full article.
