News Around the Club

Dues notices have been sent out and we are receiving a steady stream of renewals for our upcoming fiscal year which begins on September 1st. Your dues must be brought current by that date. Failure to pay dues by September 1st will result in your range access fob being deactivated and you will pay non-member rates for Skeet and Trap. If you joined the club after June 1st, you are considered carried-over until next year and owe no dues at this time.

You may reinstate your membership and retain your seniority by paying your dues plus a $25 late fee until November 1st, after which you will have to rejoin the club as a new member by paying the current dues plus the $50 initiation fee.

We have two meetings in September. The first is on September 3rd, note that this is the first Tuesday of the month rather than Monday which is Labor Day. This is the meeting at which nominations for elected office are closed. If you want to run for office, either write your name on the board in the clubhouse or contact our Nominations Chairman, Tom McCusker, before he makes the motion to close nominations. The second meeting takes place on September 16th and is the night of our Annual Meeting and Election of Officers. This is also the meeting when we change the locks and distribute new keys for the princely sum of $5.00.

Pistol

The Pistol Committee held a 3-stage "William Tell" pistol match on Saturday, July 20th that attracted 11 shooters, including two juniors. The first two stages involved Texas Star and Dueling Tree targets so shooters could get their aim in for the third target. For this target the shooters had to replicate William Tell's famous crossbow shot of hitting an apple that sat on his young son's head some distance away. Our shooters had to replicate this shot by hitting an apple perched above an ISPC torso target, aka Little Billy Tell. A hit anywhere on the torso target resulted in the untimely demise of Little Billy and scored zero points for that target.

Devlin Trout won the first relay with a score of 94 points. The second relay resulted in a three-way tie between Drew Thompson, Devlin Trout and 11-year old Mia Trout who was shooting one of Drew's guns. All three scored 94 points.

The next Pistol Match will be a Miss and You're Out! match on Saturday, August 17th, starting a 2:00 pm.

The Executive Officer has noticed that members are not always picking up their expended cases thus leaving the pistol range in an untidy condition. Please remember to pickup your brass and put them in the buckets provided, also do not leave your target frame hanging on the range and remove any used targets from the frame.

Skeet and Trap

Trap is shooting on Saturday mornings only at this time but expects to resume Tuesday evenings come September. Skeet continues to shoot on Sundays starting at 10:00 am. Both disciplines are looking for committee members to open, close, etc.

Cowboy Action Shooting

The next match will be a Wild Bunch Match and is scheduled for Sunday, August 11th, starting a 9:00 am.

Why No Newsletter For The Past Four Months?

In late April, your editor was hospitalized with an intestinal problem. Two weeks and three operations later he was released, unfortunately with post anesthesia brain fog making it difficult for him to think clearly or focus. Hopefully, he is on the road to recovery.

Quotes of the Month

"The constant lying is not aimed at making the people believe a lie, but at ensuring that no one believes anything anymore. A people that can no longer distinguish between truth and lies cannot distinguish between right and wrong. And such a people, deprived of the power to think and judge, is, without knowing and willing it, completely subjected to the rule of lies. With such a people, you can do whatever you want.."

Hannah Arendt — Political Theorist and Philosopher (1906–1975)

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms … disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes … Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man"

Thomas Jefferson

As for gun control advocates, I have no hope whatever that any facts whatever will make the slightest dent in their thinking - or lack of thinking.”

Gun Ownership Twice as High as Previously Thought?

by Guy J. Sagi posted on August 3, 2023 in NRA Shooting Illustrated

Results from a Rutgers University New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center study, released in late June, indicate the number of Americans who own guns could be twice that of the widely accepted figure of roughly 30 percent. Applying a probability model based on a statistical analysis of 3,500 respondents, the researchers determined reluctance to provide personal details to a stranger—particularly when asked about home and personal-defense choices—minimized results of previous efforts at determining the figure. The new report indicates the number is considerably higher and may run all the way up to 60 percent.

The study, titled “Predicting Potential Underreporting of Firearm Ownership in a Nationally Representative Sample,” was published by the Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology journal. The findings endorse a long-held belief in the industry that firearm owners put a higher value on their privacy than non-gun owners, particularly when it comes to questions about gun ownership.

The report also highlights a growing trend that will likely increase the inaccuracy gap in future studies that ignore participants uncomfortable with Second Amendment questions. More urbanites, females and minorities are exercising that right than ever before and, as the study notes, “Our results highlight the potential that several groups, particularly women and individuals living in urban environments, may be prone to falsely denying firearm ownership.”

The research cites the divisive and contentious debate on guns and the right to self-defense as one motivation for not answering a poll correctly when it includes firearms. Another, according to the report, “…may be that a percentage of firearm owners are concerned that their information will be leaked and the government will take their firearms or that researchers who are from universities that are typically seen as liberal and anti-firearm will paint firearm owners in a bad light.”
